Supporting & Enhancing The Lymphatic System

The key to freeing the body from illness, aches, and pain. Supporting our lymphatic system is essential for maintaining lasting health and vitality.

The Lymphatic System

It is a network of organs, vessels, and tissues that work together to get rid of toxins, waste, and excess fluids that your body does not need.

Functions of the Lymphatic System

  • Initiates Immune Response. The Lymphatic System is part of your immune system. It uses the lymph nodes to scan for pathogens or invaders such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi that may enter your body and initiates your immune response to destroy them if detected.

  • The Lymphatic System collects excess fluid from your body's tissues and returns it to the bloodstream to prevent swelling (edema).

  • Helps the body absorb fats. The Lymphatic System collects fluid that contains fats/lipids from your digestive tract (small intestines) and delivers it back to your bloodstream.

What if I have an inflamed, sluggish, clogged, or malfunctioning Lymphatic System?

  • Lymphedema (swelling or edema), Puffiness, Frequent infections with prolonged recovery, Digestive issues, Bloating, Recurrent headache, Body stiffness, Skin discoloration, Fatigue.

What is Lymphedema?

It is an abnormal accumulation of protein-rich fluid, which causes swelling (edema), affecting most often the arms or legs, but can also occur in the face, neck, abdomen, or genitals.

Causes of Lymphedema

Lymphedema develops when your lymphatic system is malfunctioned, lymphatic vessels are damaged, lymph nodes are surgically removed due to cancer treatments, or lymphatic vessels are impaired/missing.

Signs & Symptoms of Lymphedema

  • Increased limb swelling

  • Limb weakness

  • Restricted Range of Motion

  • Risk of Infection (Cellulitis)

  • Joint Pain

  • Skin changes and tightness

  • Reduction in lymphatic and vascular Circulation

Lymphedema Treatment and What to Expect

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard system of therapy for Lymphedema. It can dramatically decrease the symptoms so you can resume your everyday activities. At your first visit, your Therapist will discuss your medical history, review your home medications, listen to your concerns and needs, measure your affected and unaffected limb(s), answer questions, and develop a plan of care that may include the following:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

  • Compression Bandaging

  • Remedial Exercises

  • Skin Care Education and protection of the affected area

  • Education: Self-care instructions; Compression garment fitting and education

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Lymphatic Massage, also known as MLD, is a gentle form of massage that focuses on stimulating the Lymphatic System, which is part of your Immune System. It is more on skin stretching and uses very light pressure. The Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) specifically uses hand movements to encourage and direct the flow of the lymph (a colorless, watery fluid) toward the lymph nodes to be filtered to remove waste and toxins from your body before it goes back into your bloodstream (circulatory system). Discover the remarkable benefits of lymphatic drainage massage for improved skin health and relaxation.

Benefits of MLD

  • Helps improve the flow of lymphatic fluid, which is crucial for removing waste products and toxins from the body.

  • Boosting the immune system.

  • Alleviate swelling (edema), particularly those with lymphedema.

  • Helps calm your nervous system which can help you relax and reduce stress levels.

  • Helps reduce the appearance of puffiness, improve circulation, and potentially improve skin health.

Who Can Benefit from MLD

  • Individuals with Lymphedema. This is in combination with other components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) such as Compression Bandaging, Remedial Exercises, Skin care and protection of the affected area, and Education on Self-care instructions, Compression garment fitting education.

  • Recovering from surgery or injury

  • Individuals with chronic pain

  • People seeking relaxation and relief from stress

IMPORTANT NOTE! Individuals with the following specific medical conditions should consult with a Healthcare Provider first before undergoing MLD. Clearance from the treating Physician is needed before the initiation of MLD.

  • Acute (New, Sudden Onset) Congestive Heart Failure, Infection, Renal Failure, Deep Vein Thrombosis.
